California Statehood
After America won the Mexican-American
war in 1848, the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
was signed which gave the United States
ownership of California. Just nine days
before the signing of the treaty gold was
discovered in California. This discovery made
the undesirable land of California worth
migrating to. By 1849, 60,000 people
had rushed to California populating the

1848, California's population was about
26,000 and by 1860 it was 379,994. With the huge increase of population
California needed some type of government. Therefore, Congress allowed
California to become a state without being a territory first. In 1850,
California became the 31st state.
